In the past several weeks, Puerto Rico has been hit hard by a string of earthquakes. To help, the Town of Hempstead is sending 200 cases of water and other needed supplies to the unincorporated United States territory.

The most recent earthquake was a 5.9 magnitude quake on Jan. 11, just days after a 6.4 magnitude quake rocked the area, which is being called the area’s most powerful earthquake in 100 years. Thousands of people are without shelter, water or electricity.

Through Jan. 31, the town will  have collection boxes at municipal buildings. Items that can be donated include bottled water, non-perishable food items, laundry detergent, dish soap, hand sanitizer, diapers, baby wipes, paper towels, first aid kits, baby formula, garbage bags, towels, blankets, pillows, work gloves, safety glasses and extension cords.

The boxes are stationed at Hempstead Town Hall, 1 Washington Street; Old Town Hall, 350 Front Street and the Receiver of Taxes Office, 200 North Franklin Street; all in Hempstead, and Echo Park, 399 Nassau Blvd., West Hempstead; and Levittown Hall, 201 Levittown Pkwy., Hicksville.
