Inwood residents Christopher Lakharam and Shantie Krissoondatt had no idea the excitement they would create when they headed to the Costco on Rockaway Turnpike in North Lawrence on July 29.

Krissoondatt, 27 and pregnant, but with an expected due date of Aug. 13, gave birth to what police officials said was a healthy baby girl, in the front seat couple’s Nissan Rogue in the warehouse store’s parking lot at 8:25 a.m.

Mother and child were taken by police ambulance to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside The parents have yet to decide on a name for the girl who was 5 pounds, 12 ounces at birth.

“Everything happened so quickly,” Krissoondatt said at a news conference at South Nassau, also on July 29. “I’m still in shock and haven’t processed everything yet.”

Fourth Precinct police officers, Angelina Minerva, Ryan Napolitano and Nicholas Ryan, along with police medic, Kerri Ahern, responded to the scene. “Our training is to make sure we have a safe delivery,” Ahern said. “Delivering a baby is one of the more rewarding things to do.” Ahern said it is the third time she has delivered a baby not including her own children. Lakharam cut the umbilical cord.

Officials said the baby is “doing fine.”
