The Sid Tanenbaum Memorial Basketball Tournament celebrated its 30th anniversary indoors at Lawrence High School due to the rain last Sunday. The competition pays homage to Tanenbaum who lived in Woodmere and owned a Far Rockaway business. Known for helping the needy that lived around his metal-stamping shop, he was stabbed to death in his shop in 1986 by a woman he had given money to several times.

Team Schwartz defeated Team Barsel in the men’s senior division. Stefan Antione, Dante Sibblies, Joe Pasquale, Matt Kirshenblatt, Gene Gotti, Syd Mandelbaum and John Kirshenblatt won the men’s open division and Team Pasquale, mostly teenager who played for Hewlett High School, downed Team Wagner, captained by Hewlett Harbor resident Eric Wagner. Team Wagner populated by more veteran player had defeated Team Pasquale in the preliminary round. All winners received Knicks paraphernalia.
