Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-St. Albans) defeated challenger Shanyiat Chowdhury in the 5th Congressional District Democratic primary 66 to 33 percent on June 23.

Meeks, 66, has a relatively clear path to a 13th two-year term as there is no Republican challenger and the other candidates are from third parties in the November election.

The 5th district includes Elmont, Inwood, north and south Valley Stream and Southwest Queens.

In the 4th Congressional District Republican primary, the GOP’s choice Douglas Tuman from West Hempstead defeated Woodmere resident Cindy Grosz  75 to 25 percent.
