During a time when every traditional activity associated with the spring has been canceled or substantially altered because of the coronavirus pandemic, people have found ways to mark birthdays, graduations and the efforts of essential workers.

The Hewlett-Woodmere community dedicated a portion of time on May 22 to celebrate the birthday of longtime retired Board of Education member and former coach Stephen Witt, now 84, with a vehicle birthday parade that began at the front entrance of Hewlett High School that Friday afternoon.

Witt, a Woodmere resident, was born in 1935 and raised in Great Neck. He graduated from Great Neck High School in 1953. He attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. He has lived in Woodmere for the past 48 years. He worked as a banker, working for companies such as J.P. Morgan and Citigroup up until his retirement 13 years ago. Witt retired from the Nassau BOCES Board of Education last year after 23 years of service.
