Celebrating culture and cabaret, college and ‘Aida’ coming

Posted

After winter break, Lawrence Woodmere Academy students and staff have come back in full force. We kicked off our first week back with the annual Multicultural Assembly. Performances included songs from students’ cultures, stories of students’ ancestors, and an iMovie of students’ family members who came from different places around the world. This is just another example of how LWA is a true family. It’s moments like these that remind us of who we are and our genuine care for one another.

On March 8, the Helping Hands Club held their second cabaret of the year. Students, teachers and administrators gathered in Hessel Hall. The stage was decorated with battery-operated candles. Unlike most performances, the audience was seated on the stage, which helped to create an intimate show. From songs to poems, students were able to showcase their talents. It was truly an incredible night.

Seniors are slowly receiving admissions decisions from colleges. As a senior, I know this stress first hand. As each day goes by, there is less and less time until May 1, which is the national deadline to commit to a college. Although this time of the year is extremely stressful, the work that we have done for four years is finally paying off, and reaching our dreams is right around the corner. I wonder where we will go, and I can’t wait to find out.

The LWA Theater Club is performing Disney’s “Aida” on March 22 at 4 p.m. and March 23 at 7 p.m. This show has been months in the making. Students, as well as Tasha Partee, the school’s theater and dance teacher, have given this show their all, and Alex Altieri, the school’s music teacher has also worked diligently over the past few months to truly create the best show possible. Parent volunteers have also helped in this, by building sets, helping with tech, and supporting the performers.

At Lawrence Woodmere Academy, the third quarter has brought with it a lot of bonding, good times, and excitement. I am eager to see what the rest of the year brings.
