Brooklyn man charged in spate of Long Island burglaries

After a physical struggle, an off-duty Nassau police officer still in uniform arrested a Brooklyn man for an alleged burglary of a store in Woodmere on Dec. 23. The subsequent investigation uncovered that the man  also allegedly burglarized three other businesses on Long Island in November and December.

While driving home from work, the police officer saw a burglary in progress at S & S Woodmere Inc., at 1064 Broadway, at 5:11 a.m. on that Wednesday, according to police. As he approached the store,  Anthony Livieri, 49, of Atlantic Avenue, exited the store through the broken front glass door and attempted to flee.

“The officer was able to grab the suspect and a struggle ensued,” police said in a news release. Livieri was taken into custody. Both the officer and Livieri suffered injuries during the arrest and were taken to area hospitals for treatment, according to police.

Livieri is also allegedly responsible for the burglaries of the Hempstead Tobacco Shop at 74A Main Street in Hempstead on Nov. 24; the Ultra Gas at 360 North Central Ave. in North Valley Stream on Dec. 9; and the Speedway Gas Station at 800 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury on Dec. 11.

He was charged with second-degree burglary, three counts of third-degree burglary, second-degree assault, second-degree menacing, two counts of third-degree grand larceny, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, four counts of third-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, three counts of possession of burglar tools and disorderly conduct.

Livieri is represnted by the Leagal Aid of Nassau. He was remanded and his next court date is Jan. 14,
