Carey cheer team needs money for nationals

For the first time in H. Frank Carey High School’s history, the varsity cheerleading team earned its chance to compete at the Universal Cheerleading Association’s national competition, after winning seventh-place in the medium varsity Division 2 category at regional’s last month.

“They just hit every stunt, and it was perfect,” said Julie Beshar, a mother of one of the cheerleaders. “It’s really a huge thing they did.”

But in order to attend the national competition at Disney World in February, the girls have to raise money for the trip’s expenses, including flights, food and the hotel. Beshar said she estimates the cost at $1,000 per person, and “if one girl doesn’t go nobody goes.”

To raise the money, she said, the team will “have to hit the pavement” and sell Carey cheerleading t-shirts. The cheerleaders also created a GoFundMe on Dec. 8 to raise $10,000.

“We are asking for our families’, friends’ and community’s help to complete our dream,” it reads. “With the help of our coaches, we have spent countless hours on the mat to get to where we are. In just three short seasons, this team has competed in two regional competitions and a county championship. We thank you for supporting us and our community, who we proudly represent.”

The team has raised more than $3,000 for the trip as of Dec. 20. To contribute, visit https://bit.ly/2ZecqJ0
