Polk Street School Principal Gilbert Torossian joined kindergartners at an end-of-year show in 2016. The beloved Franklin Square principal has not been seen at the school since the week of Feb. 5, leaving students and parents to question the school district as to why. Meera Empowerment, a nonprofit organization based in Elmont, hosts fashion shows each year to empower youth in the community. The organization hosts its third annual prom dress and suit giveaway this year with the Elmont Memorial Parent Teacher Student Association to help get prom dresses and suits into the hands of students who could not afford their own.

Community members celebrated the Elmont Memorial Library board’s unanimous vote to reinstate early voting at the facility at a board meeting on Feb. 22. In January, residents were outraged at the board’s decision to discontinue hosting early voting at the library, based on alleged “safety concerns” that arose during electioneering in the run-up to last fall’s election, when early voting took place between Oct. 28 and Nov. 5. more
