Lynbrook village officials, Chamber of Commerce to partner and present drive-in movie event at Greis Park

Lynbrook residents who are tired of staying inside during the coronavirus quarantine will have the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor movie on May 22.

The Lynbrook village board and Chamber of Commerce have partnered to present their own Memorial Day weekend blockbuster,  a drive-in movie event for the community at Greis Park on May 22 at 8 p.m., with a rain date set for May 23 at the same time. Mayor Alan Beach said there may be two showings of the movie. Tickets will be available starting May 18.

"I think this is going to be awesome," Beach said. "I think people are really going to be very happy to be able to do something with their family. And they’ll be safe inside their cars."

Beach said village officials can't reveal the name of the movie until the board receives written confirmation from the company they are renting the projector and screen from. The plan is to set up a large, 40-by-50, roughly 10-foot tall inflatable screen to project the movie on. The screen is being rented in a join effort between the New Vision Party and the chamber, said Beach, who credited chamber President Stephen Wangel with the idea for the drive-in movie.

Cars will be parked in rows that are marked six feet from one another, and Beach said the field at Greis Park can accomodate between 250 to 300 vehicles. Cars will park on Fields C and D at the park, which are set to undergo a $1.3 million transformation into turf fields. That project has been put on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic, Beach added.

Beach said there were talks of having restaurants get involved to present on-the-go refreshments for people to bring to the movie, but that wasn't finalized yet, and residents are welcome to bring their own refreshments. The restrooms at the facility will also be open, but there will be markers outside to establish a distance of six feet between people waiting in line, and a person will be stationed to limit the number of people using the facilities at a time.

"I’m very excited to be able to offer something to the village working together with the chamber," Beach said "Everyone is trying to make things good for the village. It’s a great place to live."

The event is open to Incorporated Village of Lynbrook residents only. To purchase free tickets starting on May 18, call (516) 599-8000, or email pciampi@lynbrookvillage.com.
