The Lynbrook Titans girls’ self-defense program recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and hosted its annual awards ceremony at Angelina’s Pizzeria & Restaurant.

Hilary Becker, who directs the self-defense program and is a member of the village’s board of trustees, said it was a great night celebrating the silver anniversary of the club and honoring its members.

“All of the young ladies were able to make it through a very rigorous program for several weeks,” Becker said. “They all improved in their strength and conditioning and learned some very valuable self-defense moves and personal safety awareness.”

Self-defense coach Kenny Murphy was also honored at the event for his 10 years of service to the program.

The self-defense program focuses on three main areas. They include awareness, which preaches for the girls to be active and aware when they are on their own, something that is vital to personal safety; fitness, which instills the importance of exercise, eating properly and getting the right amount of sleep each night; and self-defense, which teaches them to first walk or run away to get help when facing a dangerous situation and how to defend themselves as a last resort, using basic and safe moves.

“We look forward to another 25 years of teaching our young ladies self-defense and personal safety,” Becker said.
