East Rockaway School District teachers Dr. Christian Soto and Tom Canale were recognized by St. John’s University’s News and Media online publication for their experiences providing distance learning for their students during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Soto and Canale are alumni of St. John’s University, graduating in 2011 and 2013, respectively. Soto is a sixth grade English Language Arts and social studies teacher at Centre Avenue Elementary School and Canale is a 10th grade English teacher at the East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School.

In the article, “From a Distance, Two Educators Connect with Their Students,” Soto and Canale discuss their expertise on altering the existing course outline to online learning, types of successful forms of instruction, how they have responded to student challenges, solutions to help keep students engaged and advice they’ve provided for parents.

“What a wonderful opportunity to showcase two of our teachers and hear their perspective on distance learning in East Rockaway during this very challenging time,” Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz said in a statement. “I was most impressed by the positivity and insights that Christian and Tom offered in their responses. What a great article.”
