East Rockaway officials form committee focused on driver, pedestrian safety

Spurred by the desire to keep pedestrians and drivers safe, Village of East Rockaway officials have partnered with the Town of Hempstead and school and community groups to organize a committee focused on tackling safety issues.

Mayor Bruno Romano announced that the committee comprises Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, members of the Centre Avenue and Rhame Avenue Elementary School PTAs, the East Rockaway Board of Education, high school administrators, St. Raymond’s administrators, Girls and Boys Scouts troops, the East Rockaway Raiders football team and other community stakeholders.

Romano said he was “delighted” to reveal the committee. “By bringing stakeholders to the table, we can help the Nassau County Police Department raise awareness, discourage distracted driving and remind all those on the road to follow the law,” he said.

The mission of the committee is to remind residents that the village is their home and they should do all they can to keep it safe. The goal of spreading the message will be achieved through social media campaigns, public service announcements, literature and lawn signs that will remind residents to drive safe, be courteous and pay attention.

The initial phase of the campaign will include video public service announcements, which will be released before school returns in September. The videos will be posted on the village website and social media.

The committee is planning a community forum for late September in the annex of the library, but a date had not been determined at press time. Representatives of the village board, Town of Hempstead, Nassau County Police Department and the American Automobile Association will speak at the event. The next public village board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. at East Rockaway Village Hall.
