Police: Two men arrested for string of burglaries in East Meadow, Massapequa

Two men committed a string of burglaries at smoke shops across East Meadow and Massapequa, according to police, who arrested them after they allegedly stole from a seventh storefront in East Meadow on Jan. 25.

Uzair Khan, 18, of East Meadow and Mathew Hartenstein, 19, of Brooklyn, broke into E-Smoke Shop on Hempstead Turnpike at 3:13 a.m. and stole multiple nicotine-based and CBD-based products, police said.

Four days later, police spotted and arrested Khan near the intersection of Hempstead Turnpike and Avis Drive in East Meadow. The following day, they arrested Hartenstein, who was seen on Clocks Boulevard in Massapequa.

Further investigation revealed that Khan and Hartenstein allegedly broke into and stole from the following six additional storefronts over the past two months:

  • Pipes/Stuff Smoke Shop on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow on Dec. 8
  • E-Smoke Shop on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow on Dec. 12
  • Twisted Smoke Shop on Merrick Avenue in East Meadow on Dec. 28
  • Twisted Smoke Shop on Merrick Avenue in East Meadow on Jan. 5
  • Arturo Smoke Shop on Merrick Road in Massapequa on Jan. 12
  • Arturo Smoke Shop on Merrick Road in Massapequa on Jan. 28

Khan and Hartenstein are facing seven charges of third-degree burglary. They will be arraigned in the Town of Hempstead First District Court on Jan. 30.
