Name that Tune raises funds for a fellow Kiwanian

The East Meadow Kiwanis yielded one of its largest crowds at its 10th annual and highly anticipated fundraiser, “Name that Tune” on Feb. 8 at the East Meadow Fire Department.

Participants were not only from East Meadow Kiwanians, but friends and members of neighboring Kiwanis clubs, all of who came to show support for Peter Mancuso. In June 2016, Mancuso was elected trustee on the board of Kiwanis International and that year’s “Name that Tune” fundraiser went toward helping finance his run for the seat. This year, the Kiwanis followed the trend and dedicated the event to his run for vice president of the global service club.

Addressing the crowd, Mancuso said that the mission of Kiwanis International has always been for the local clubs to excel and flourish through fellowship and service. “Thank you all for teaching me the importance of that in Kiwanis,” he said.

Gary Fromowitz, the president of the East Meadow Kiwanis, said that Mancuso has always been an important asset to both Kiwanis International and East Meadow Kiwanis. “He’s very well-spoken, he’s verbose and we’re happy supporting him in his run for vice president,” Fromowitz said.

Mancuso is an assistant district attorney for Nassau County, a position he held from 1978 to 1986 before going into private practice for eight years, then returning to his county career in 1994.

“Knowing Peter going through the ranks, he’s always been somebody who believes in Kiwanis,” said Steve Sirgiovanni, the former Governor of the New York District of Kiwanis International. “He loves Kiwanis and he wants to bring Kiwanis to a new century.”

Kiwanis International is the global umbrella organization responsible for creating activities, regulating programs and putting forward service modules for all local Kiwanis clubs.

One of Kiwanis International’s main philanthropic efforts is called the Eliminate Project, and focuses on ridding the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus. When the group began their efforts in 2010, there were 39 countries at risk of being affected by the disease. That number has reduced to 14 and Kiwanis International has raised $110 million towards curbing it.

Kiwanians could vote for Mancuso at the Kiwanis International Convention from June 27 to June 29 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
