Much ado at the East Meadow Public Library

The East Meadow Public Library was busy with activity on July 17, when many guests spent the hot summer afternoon enjoying some of the many activities and amenities the library has to offer.

In the morning, guests learned the art of meditation and parents took their children to “Mother Goose Time,” in which they learned literacy through rhymes and songs.

July 17 also marked the first session of an English as a Second Language course, presented by Literacy Nassau. Students engaged in short, conversational English and learned short phrases and sentences. The next class will be offered at the library on Aug. 1.

In the lobby, the library had available to guests a booth of the Nassau County Department of Health and Human Services, where representatives greeted guests and answered any of their questions or concerns.

And animals roam through a sun-streaked African landscape in “Party Safari,” the art exhibit that is on display all July at the library and was created by the members of the AHRC Nassau’s East Meadow location.

The diverse group that comprises the AHRC’s art-centric location voted on the theme and, either independently or with a mentor, worked over the course of three months on artwork to contribute.

“We have artists of all different abilities and want each of them to be represented,” said Lisa Moosmueller, the gallery’s manager. The members of the AHRC, who live with intellectual and developmental disabilities, contribute to their community through their artwork and volunteer work such as providing aid at local senior centers.

Another special program on July 17 taught an aging audience how to recall important memories through song. “Creative Aging: A Workshop in Seeing Life Anew” used guided imagination, exploration of the senses, free writing, group sharing and collaboration to help guests rediscover their creative selves.
