Overcast Mrs. Belmont’s Agricultural School for Women
Earlier this month, I highlighted the importance of the Alva Erskine Smith Vanderbilt Belmont, also known as Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont. As you may recall, she inherited the Brookholt Estate on Front Street in East Meadow and was a vocal supporter of progressivism, particularly women's rights. After the death of her husband, she ran the Brookholt Agricultural School for Women (Mrs. Belmont's Farm for Women). Though the venture lasted only one year, it was highly publicized. Here are four photographs from the Bain Collection of the Library of Congress showing Alva Belmont and pupils on her estate in 1911.
