Golfers on the green for Kiwanis memorial fundraiser

Golfers tee’d off at the largest at Eisenhower Park on July 22 during the largest fundraiser for the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, also run by Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant, the Steven J. Eisman Memorial Golf Outing.

Steven Eisman died at 61 in November 2015 after a battle with pneumonia. The golf outing, which had been held for roughly 25 years at the time, was renamed in his memory because of his dedication to the community.

Eisman was a past president of the East Meadow Kiwanis and Chamber of Commerce clubs and a past president of the Nassau County Bar Association. He also represented East Meadow as lieutenant governor of the Long Island South Central Kiwanis division and parliamentarian for the New York District Kiwanis.

“He was a very strong supporter of Kiwanis,” added Debbie Coats, who organized the fundraiser along with Alan Beinhacker, Mike Litzner and Frank Borrelli, owner of Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant.

The event was sponsored by 78 businesses and organization from the community and beyond. Each committee organizer chose a charity to which a portion of the funds were distributed, including the Ataxia Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, Breath Alive and the Easterseals veteran’s support foundation. Additional funds benefit Kiwanis community programs and go toward sending children to Kamp Kiwanis, in upstate Taberg, a summer camp for underprivileged children.

East Meadow Kiwanis has a lot to celebrate this year, including last month’s election of member Peter Mancuso as vice president of Kiwanis International. The global umbrella organization is responsible for creating activities, regulating programs and putting forward service modules for all local Kiwanis clubs.

Mancuso, who was first elected to the board as a trustee in 2016, will serve as vice president for three years before automatically moving up as president. “We’re just so proud of the work he’s done and the accomplishments he’s achieved,” Coates said.

The golf outing concluded with a dinner and celebration at Borrelli’s Italian Restaurant in East Meadow.
