Haley Anderson, a nursing student at Binghamton University and former student of W.T. Clarke High School in East Meadow, was found dead on March 9 in her off-campus apartment, police reported. After an autopsy was conducted, the 22-year old’s death was ruled as a homicide.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced on Monday that the suspect Orlando Tercero, 22, fled the country for Nicaragua before the police found Anderson’s body. “Though we cannot bring Haley Anderson back, we will fight for justice,” he said in a statement.

The next day, Nicaraguan police detained Tercero and handed him to judicial authorities in the Central American country, as reported by the Associated Press.

Anderson’s family is raising money on gofundme.com to alleviate the expenses of her funeral. It was set up on March 11 and has since garnered $46,358 by 1,141 people— more than triple its $15,000 goal.
