John F. Kennedy High School graduate Jake Levine is the receiver of a $4,000 Environmental Scholarship for his research in water systems.
The New York Water Environment Association, a statewide nonprofit organization of water quality management professionals, is proud to announce the honor for Levine, of Bellmore. Levine received his diploma from Kennedy this year, and is enrolled in the Earth Systems Program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA.
Levine, 18, is pursuing a bachelor of science in Earth Systems at Stanford. Levine intends to work with the Water in the West research program, whose current projects include sustainable groundwater, water and energy, watershed health, and water allocation and management.
He plans to eventually pursue a PhD in environmental engineering and to use his education to enhance society’s ability to co-exist with the planet that sustains us.
“I am optimistic that during my time at Stanford, I can educate myself while also making meaningful contributions to the health of the environment,” Levine said. “My goal is to combine my aptitude for science and math with my passion for addressing climate change and protecting our environment.”
While in high school, Levine was recognized as a Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholar – one of only 300 students nationwide. He also was involved in several extracurricular activities, including National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Math Honor Society, French Honor Society, and was a Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Regional Semi-finalist. Levine also worked on Congressional campaigns with strong environmental platforms.
Since the inception of its Scholarship Program in 1998, NYWEA has granted over $483,000 in scholarship to 193 students. A total of $50,000 is being awarded this year to eight students receiving Environmental Scholarships.
