Dubbed a “superstorm” by weather forecasters, Hurricane Sandy pummeled Bellmore-Merrick with floodwaters that reached three to six feet in many parts of south Bellmore and south Merrick and destroyed homes and cars, while also bringing hurricane-force wind gusts that toppled trees, tore the siding off houses, and ripped apart fences and decks. more
Nassau County Police are reporting that BHS’s annual homecoming game was suspended around 8:30 p.m. Friday when gunshots were heard in a parking lot near the football field. A 20-year-old man was also found stabbed soon after the gunfire died down, but police do not believe the two incidents were directly connected. more
As the sun began to set on Saturday night, I found myself in a familiar trail of cars headed towards Baldwin Park to catch the 17th Annual Baldwin Day celebration. At the gates, smiling, orange-vested officials directed drivers and pedestrians away from caution-taped areas and towards safe parking and bring-your-own-blanket picnic style seating for the evening’s festivities. more

Baldwin American Legion Post 246 held its annual Law and Order Night at their headquarters on Grand Ave. over the weekend. The event is held to show appreciation for the unsung, and frequently unpaid, people who make our communities livable: law officers, firefighters, teachers and other community members who give unselfishly of themselves on a daily basis. Post 246 recognized members of the Baldwin Fire Department, the Nassau County Police Department, the New York State Police and the United States Coast Guard at this year’s celebration. more
